Therapy Approaches for Children

Evidence-based approaches to support communication, feeding and development.

Every child develops differently. We use a range of evidence-based therapy approaches tailored to each child’s unique strengths, challenges and goals — carefully selecting and combining the methods that best support your child, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

We work with babies, children and families across the Central Coast, NSW.

About

What Are Therapy Approaches?

A therapy approach is the method or framework a therapist uses to help a child develop new skills. Different approaches support different areas of development — some focus on communication and speech, while others support feeding, emotional regulation, social interaction, sensory processing or play.

At RTC, approaches are never selected simply because they are popular. We choose them based on your child’s individual profile, developmental needs and family goals — and in many cases children benefit from a combination of approaches working together.

How we choose

How We Choose the Right Approach

Every child is unique, so the most effective approach can vary. Our therapy programmes are:

Child-led and play-based
Family-centred and collaborative
Neuroaffirming and strengths-based
Evidence-informed and goal-focused
Designed to fit naturally into everyday routines

Our goal is not to fit your child into a therapy model — it’s to select the approaches that best support your child.

Working together

How Therapy Approaches Work Together

Children rarely fit neatly into a single therapy category. A child with feeding difficulties may benefit from Feeding Therapy, OMT and Sensory Stimulation Strategies. A child with Childhood Apraxia of Speech may benefit from PROMPT, DTTC and Speech & Language Therapy. A child who is autistic may benefit from DIR®/Floortime, Social Skills Development, Theraplay and Language Therapy.

By combining the most appropriate approaches, we support the whole child rather than focusing on a single challenge.

Why it matters

Why Early Intervention Matters

The first years of life provide the greatest opportunity for learning and development. Research consistently shows early support can help children:

Develop stronger communication skills
Improve social interaction
Build confidence and independence
Strengthen feeding and eating skills
Develop emotional regulation
Improve school readiness
Increase participation in everyday activities
Where we use them
