What’s inside

Twenty short lessons, nine modules

Most lessons take eight to fifteen minutes. Nothing is locked, so you can jump to what you need tonight.

Module 0

Start Here

Find your starting point. If the release hasn’t happened yet: how to prepare your child, and what to have ready for the day.

Module 1

Foundations

What a release actually changes, explained through what the tongue does, and why the weeks afterwards matter.

Module 2

The Recovery Window

The first three weeks, day by day. What normal healing looks like, the signs that mean call your provider, and comfort, food and sleep.

Module 3

Wound Care — Your Provider’s Plan

Carrying out your provider’s plan gently: positions, timing, games that help, and what to do when aftercare just isn’t happening.

Module 4

The Feeding Transition

How tongue movement shapes breast, bottle and solid foods. Fussy eating, textures, chewing, and when to ask for help.

Module 5

Bridge to Daily Practice

Three simple tongue activities your child does themselves, and how to make them a habit that sticks.

Module 6

Language Watchpoints

Early language milestones, the sounds the tongue shapes, and when, and how, to see a speech pathologist.

Module 7

Your Care Team

Who does what: dentist, doctor, lactation consultant, speech pathologist, myofunctional therapist. And what to do when they disagree.

Module 8

The Long View

Simple check-ins at six and twelve months, comparing your child with themselves. And knowing when you’re done.

Does this sound like you?

The release takes minutes. The weeks after it are yours.

  • “Is this meant to look like that?”You can’t tell normal healing from infection.
  • “They won’t let me near their mouth.”The instructions were written for a newborn, not a child with opinions.
  • “They’re barely eating.”You’re not sure what to offer, or when to worry.
  • “Everyone tells me something different.”Dentist, lactation consultant, the internet. None of them agree.

If that sounds familiar, you’re in the right place, and you’re not the only one.

Lesson 3.5 · When aftercare isn’t happening

If you have come to this lesson, something isn’t working, and you may have spent a few days feeling like the only parent who can’t manage a thirty-second task.

You are not. A toddler who has worked out what is coming and objects before you’ve even started is the most normal thing in the world.

Leana Matodes, paediatric speech pathologist
Author of Time 2 Play, an activity guide for parents of children from birth to five
About the author

Written by a paediatric speech pathologist who spends her days with young children

Hello, I’m Leana Matodes, a paediatric speech pathologist (speech-language pathologist) and the founder of RTC Speech Pathology. Most of my working week is spent with young children and their families: feeding, first words, and helping little mouths do what they need to do.

I’m a Certified Practising Speech Pathologist and a trained orofacial myofunctional therapist, with further training in feeding therapy and play-based approaches. I’m also the author of Time 2 Play, and a mum of two, so I know the difference between advice that works in a clinic and advice that works at home.

I made this course because I kept meeting the same families: a release done well, a sheet of instructions, and a child who wanted no part of any of it.

Every child heals at their own pace. I hope this course helps yours, and helps you feel calm and confident along the way.

How it works

Made to be read at 2am, one-handed, with a child on your lap

  • Start where you are. Release booked, just done, or months ago: the first lesson sends you to the right place.
  • Short written lessons in plain language. Each one explains why in a sentence or two, then gives you something to do.
  • Pictures and simple diagrams, drawn, never clinical. No photos of procedures or wounds anywhere in the course.
  • 14 printable sheets for the fridge.
  • Friendly check-ins at the end of some lessons. No scores, no pass or fail.

It works alongside your provider, never against them

Providers differ on aftercare, honestly and for good reasons. This course explains wound care so you understand your own provider’s plan and can carry it out calmly. If anything here differs from what you were told, what you were told wins.

Who it’s for

Is this course right for you?

It’s for you if

  • your child is between 6 months and 10 years old
  • a tongue-tie or lip-tie release is booked, has just happened, or happened months ago
  • you want to understand what’s happening and have a plan, not just a list of instructions
  • your child finds aftercare hard, and you need ideas that don’t involve a battle

It’s not for you if

  • your baby is under 6 months
  • you want to know whether your child needs a release. That’s a conversation for an assessing provider
  • you need advice for an emergency. Please contact your provider or your local emergency service
Questions

Questions parents ask

My provider already gave me aftercare instructions. Do I still need this?

Your provider’s instructions come first, always. This course helps you carry them out: what each step is for, how to keep it calm, what to do when your child refuses. It also covers everything around them: healing, feeding, sleep, speech and the months afterwards.

My child is older, five or eight. Is it still relevant?

Yes. Releases happen at every age, and the course is relevant from 6 months to 10 years: getting ready, healing, aftercare, feeding, the check-ins and knowing when to see a speech pathologist. Many of the pictures show younger children, because that’s when aftercare is hardest to manage. With an older child you’ll find the explanations easier to share, and the games easy to adapt.

My baby is under twelve months. Is it still useful?

Yes, from six months. Babies get a gentle oral-play approach rather than stretches, plus everything on healing, feeding and milestones.

I’ve read that specialists disagree about stretches. Where does this course stand?

They do disagree, and the course says so openly. Many providers recommend gentle techniques after a release; some national health bodies advise against routine wound stretching; there isn’t yet research that settles it. So the course doesn’t prescribe wound care. It explains your own provider’s plan and shows you how to do it gently. For babies under twelve months, it recommends no stretches at all.

The release was months ago. Is it too late?

No. Feeding, speech and the six- and twelve-month check-ins are all still ahead, and the course tells you where to start.

Does it matter whether it was a laser or scissors release?

No. The course covers both, and explains the difference in the first module.

Will I see photos or videos of the procedure?

No. The course is fully illustrated, and nothing in it shows a procedure, an instrument or a real wound.

How long do I have access?

For as long as the course is offered, and at least 5 years from purchase, including any updates. If we ever retire it, you’ll get 90 days’ notice and a copy of the written lessons and printables to keep. Use it again for a younger sibling.

Is this medical advice?

No. It’s education for parents, written by a speech pathologist. It doesn’t replace your child’s own providers, and it can’t assess your child. If you’re worried about your child, contact your provider.
